Midwifery Services

The Midwives at West Exe Children's Centre work in both the community and hospital settings.  The aim is to try and provide continuity of care to women in our area both antenatally, in labour and postnatally.

Whilst it cannot be guaranteed that you will 'know' the Midwife looking after you in labour (although we do our best to facilitate this), the Midwife will usually be from the West Exe Team, and you may well see her again postnatally once you go home.

The West Exe Midwives cover a large geographical area - Starcross and Exminster, St Thomas, Foxhayes and Exwick surgeries.  Each surgery has their own Midwife attached to it, and they hold regular antenatal clinics each week:

You can also speak to a midwife during office hours at West Exe Children's Centre by ringing 07977576885 (the best time is between 9am and 9.30am before we leave to go out on visits.  You are of course welcome to leave a message for a midwife to ring you back at any other time).

If you need to speak to a Midwife urgently or you think you are in labour please call 07977576885 and we will give you the on-call Midwife number.  If you are unable to contact the on-call Midwife you can contact the Labour Ward on 01392 406650.

We try to offer a home assessment service in labour - where a Midwife can visit you at home prior to coming into hospital, or you may even choose to stay and birth at home.  Your own Midwife can give you further information on this and will assess your suitability.

We also offer Antenatal classes which cover baby care, breastfeeding and labour/birth preparation.
